The first key to making good money as a performing magician is to know that it is possible and that it is not a pipe dream.
There are many magicians, illusionists and mentalists around the world who make a six-figure income. Many established working pros who work regularly in mid-to-high-level markets are, more likely than not, making a six-figure income.
Every successful magician has their own approach to their business and brand that typically leverages on their personal strengths, markets and area of expertise.
Assuming we confine the discussion of the source of making money to just performing shows, there are really only two ways for an entertainer to make more money.
1. Do More Shows
2. Get More Money for Each Show You Do
If you want to make more money, you try to book more shows. It is logical and intuitive and this is what most entertainers work towards.
I outline my alternative basic approach in this post “Why Some Magic Acts Can Charge 10 Times More Than Others” but detail the entire blueprint in my book “The Showbiz Master Plan”.
But, besides a paradigm shift, successful live entertainers tend to have common characteristics. These include:
A Solid Product
Successful magicians have good shows or good acts. If not, they would not be able to have sustained success. Even if their marketing was top notch, their product ultimately has to be good.
Good marketing can help promote and sell a good show but the same good marketing can also kill a bad show. If a bad show is promoted with great marketing but is ultimately proven to be sub par, you can be sure it will not be booked again and word will get around.
Work on a consistent high quality product.
A Proven Track Record Over Time
Successful entertainers need to have a proven track record over time. Sure, everyone has a bad night every now and then but successful entertainers have many more good shows than bad ones. They also build a portfolio of satisfied repeat clients, successful projects and meaningful milestones. So, know that it takes time to reach a successful level. Be patient but work hard and smart.
Niche Markets
All successful entertainers identify a niche market(s) they can excel and succeed in. They are not magicians for all occasions or jack of all traders. Rather, they are masters of just one or two specific markets that are lucrative.
They also are reactive to the market over time and expand or search for new markets when they outgrow their markets. This could be in the form of:
- Expanding into the Same Market outside Their Geographical Location,
- Expanding into Other Related Markets within Their Same Geographical Location
- Expanding into Other Related Markets outside Their Geographical Location
Identify a market that you can dominate and that has value.
